Bicycle commuting is becoming more and more popular. It is a healthy, safe, fast, cost efficient and environmentally friendly way of getting around. There are many types of bikes out there but one of the newest trends in bicycle commuting is the folding bike. One of the leaders in this industry is the Brompton folding bicycle based in Britain. They have been in production for over 15 years and still boast the title of the world’s most compact folding bike. Brompton bikes are built and designed around your personal wants and needs.
There are three basic models of Brompton folding bicycles. Models are named using a specific code of letters and numbers to describe the type of handle bar, number of gears and factory attached fixtures. The three different handlebar styles are classified as “S” for sporty, “M” for traditional and “P” for dual height.
The different gear choices you have are 1 (single speed), 2 (two speed derailleur), 3 (three speed internal hub) and 6 (internal hub and derailleur). The fixture codes consist of “E” for minimal; no mudguards or pump, “L” for mudguards and “R” for rear rack. There is also a superlight upgrade option and the code for that is “-X”. Ok, I know that all sounds kind of confusing but it’s really not. It’s just a way for them to customize a bike perfectly according to your needs.
Aside from those choices, there are other additions you may choose from. “R” models may have special “eazy wheels” which help to push the bike when folded, kind of like a suitcase on wheels. All models also have the option of having no lights, lighting powered from a battery, a bottle shaped tyre dynamo or front wheel hub dynamo light.
Another choice you will have is the length of the seat post with the standard, extended or telescopic length for very tall riders. The standard Brompton saddle can also be substituted by a special leather saddle for extra comfort.
Some models have special fittings to hide a compact high-pressure bicycle pump within its saddle. All models have the option to have the front luggage block fitted to carry cargo as well for those who commute and need to store their luggage or briefcase. These bikes are built to order so you can customize your Brompton folding bicycle even down to the colour of bike you’d like!
